During this Holy Week, I’ve been reflecting on Psalm 51:5 (ESV):
“Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive
me.”
King David’s words are not about one
specific sin. They are about all of us.
We were all born in a sinful
condition. Sin may show up differently in each life—pride, anger, lust,
selfishness, or struggles we do not always speak about—but the root is the
same. None of us entered this world righteous on our own.
Therefore, when a homosexual says he
or she believes they were born that way, we should not respond with outrage as
though such honesty is beyond the reach of biblical truth. David’s words in
Psalm 51 remind us that all humanity was born in sin. That does not justify
sin, but it should humble us enough to stop acting as though one person’s
struggle is more shocking than another’s. Christians also need to stop being
lazy about praying and remember that God has called us to pray for the sinner,
not sit in the seat of judgment over them. Yes, it can be frustrating when
people do not believe they are in sin, but that should drive us to prayer all
the more—that the Holy Spirit would lead them into truth. That’s walking in the
love of Jesus; praying for folks, not trying to control them. Jesus was not sent
to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved, and that
whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life (John
3:16–17).
The ground is level at the foot of the
cross.
And that is what makes Holy Week so
powerful.
Jesus did not come for one category of
sin. He came for all of it. For all of us.
What we were born into does not have
to be where we remain.
Through Christ, there is forgiveness.
Through Christ, there is transformation.
Through Christ, there is new life.
Try Jesus. He will make a difference.
