SELAH: Comfort Is Not Always the Standard. Truth Is. God's Word Is.©

Sometimes my lips and tongue are more comfortable saying, "they was" instead of "they were," or "her and I was having fun" instead of "she and I were having fun." Those expressions still find their way into the first drafts of my writing reminding me that what comes naturally is not always what is right.

I suppose that's one of the reasons my mother and father enrolled me in speech therapy when I was younger. Speaking incorrectly felt natural to me, but natural did not make it correct.

That realization has stayed with me throughout life. Just because something feels comfortable doesn't mean it's right. Sometimes we become so accustomed to speaking, thinking, or living a certain way that we mistake familiarity for truth.

The same principle applies to our spiritual lives. God's Word often corrects what comes naturally to us -  not to condemn us - but to help us grow into who He created us to be.

Comfort is not always the standard. Truth is. God's Word is.
