Selah: Pause and Consider | Carrying a Different Cross©

Some people quietly carry burdens others will never fully understand.

The Bible calls all believers to surrender anything that conflicts with God and the teachings of Jesus; and for those who have genuinely made Jesus Lord of their lives, this can mean surrendering desires, relationships, ambitions, or parts of life that feel deeply personal and human. Jesus said that those who want to follow Him must pick up their cross in order to do so. (Matthew 16:24; Mark 8:34; Luke 9:23)

The call to deny ourselves and follow Him was never presented as easy. For Christians who experience same-sex attraction yet still desire to live according to Scripture as they understand it — that God designed sexual intimacy for the covenant of marriage between a man and a woman — that journey can feel especially heavy in a world that often frames fulfillment through romance and intimacy.

Discipleship sometimes requires sacrifice that others may never see.  And yet, God’s grace has a way of meeting people in the middle of difficult roads.  Perhaps that is why some who carry deep struggles also seem to carry deep creativity, compassion, sensitivity, resilience, or gifts that touch the lives of others. Only God fully understands the weight each person bears and the strength He gives to endure it.

Scripture reminds believers that enduring temptation, trials, and hardship faithfully is not unnoticed by God.  “Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life…” — James 1:12
