Luke 20:20 tells us that spies were sent who “pretended
to be righteous” so they could catch Jesus in His words.
They didn’t come as obvious enemies. They came cloaked in
goodness. They came sounding sincere. They came looking holy.
Yes… there are great pretenders.
But Scripture has already warned us:
“…For the Lord does not see as man
sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the
heart.”
— 1 Samuel 16:7b (NKJV)
Outward appearance can impress people. It can influence
crowds. It can even deceive the undiscerning.
But it does not fool God.
“All a person’s ways seem pure to
them, but motives are weighed by the Lord.”
— Proverbs 16:2 (NIV)
Motives matter.
Some speak righteousness but pursue advantage. Some ask
questions not to learn, but to trap. Some appear supportive, but are positioned
to undermine.
Jesus discerned them immediately.
And He still does.
Let this not only be a warning about others, but a mirror
for ourselves. May we never become so committed to looking holy that we neglect
being holy.
Because in the end, appearances are seen by people. But
motives are weighed by God.
God does not reward the appearance or the performance of holiness,
He weighs the heart. He weighs the motive.
Peace & Blessings,
