Our online Zoom Bible Study has dwindled over the years because many of those who faithfully attended have transitioned. Most were seniors living in income-based housing developments where we were once allowed to bring Bible Study directly to the residents. They joined the online Bible Study after we met them where they were. Some even joined our church and began fellowshipping with other believers.
People sometimes assume that because someone is older, they either already know the Lord or have made up their minds not to know Him. But that is not always the case.
It isn’t simply that seniors are lonely, overlooked, or unable to get to church. Some may be approaching the end of life without ever having clearly understood the Gospel or what it means to receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
Colonel Harland Sanders, founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken, understood this. At 89 years old, he said in this video:
“I’m greatly concerned for older people. See... I was about 77 years old when I found the Lord. I knew I should have Him. I knew I should walk with Him. But, I couldn’t reach Him.”
Senior ministry is about more than fellowship or companionship. It’s also about evangelism—sharing the Gospel with someone while there is still time. There are seniors all around us who may feel as Colonel Sanders once felt—knowing they need God, perhaps even wanting to know Him, but not knowing how to reach Him. The harvest among our seniors is also plenteous, and laborers are needed.
May we not overlook them.
