LIVING, LOSING, & LEANING ON GOD: LIFE AFTER CANCER ONE DAY AT A TIME©

If you're a cancer survivor like me, you know the journey doesn’t end when treatment does. I was diagnosed with right breast cancer and went through a lumpectomy, chemotherapy, and radiation. I thank God every day for bringing me through, and that is my testimony, He brought me through.  I'm cancer free.  But I’ll be honest, some battles linger long after the treatments are over.

One of those battles for me has been weight gain.

It wasn’t something I expected. In fact, I actually lost a significant amount of weight while going through treatment which is a common response to the physical toll of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. But once treatment ended, the weight started to come back - and quickly - and I’ve since learned I’m not alone. Weight gain after cancer is a reality for many of us. Between hormonal changes, medications, fluid retention, slowed metabolism, and reduced activity, our bodies go through a lot. And when you're exhausted, discouraged, or simply trying to survive, fitness goals can fall to the side.

What’s even harder is the pressure we often feel to “bounce back,” to “look healthy,” or to fit into the version of ourselves that existed before cancer.

But here's the truth I’m learning: healing doesn’t follow a timeline, and our worth is not measured by a number on a scale. God brought us through cancer. He will also walk with us through this.

It’s easy to feel frustrated or defeated when the weight doesn’t come off quickly. But I want to encourage you, as I encourage myself: take it one day at a time. Don’t rush. Don’t compare. Don’t lose heart. This is a journey of grace, not perfection.

Hebrews 12:2 reminds us to fix our eyes on “Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.” He wrote our beginning, and He is faithful to complete our story including this chapter. Whether it’s losing weight, regaining strength, getting your thick hair back, or simply feeling like yourself again, you are not alone, and you are not without hope.

So today, let’s commit to small steps: maybe it's a walk on the treadmill, a nourishing meal, or a simple prayer for strength. Let’s speak kindly to ourselves and thank God for how far we’ve come. The same God who healed us will also help us move forward.

Victory is still possible. Wholeness is still possible. And you, beloved, are still beautifully in progress.

You are not what happened to you. You are who God says you are: more than a conqueror.

Keep going. You’re not alone.  Pray this prayer with me:

Merciful God, in the name of JESUS,

Thank You for bringing me and every survivor reading this through the storm of cancer. You are our Healer, our Sustainer, and the One who sees every silent struggle we face. You know the frustrations we carry; especially when our bodies don’t feel or look the way they used to.

Lord, help us not to be discouraged. Remind us that we are fearfully and wonderfully made, even in this season of recovery and change. Strengthen our minds, renew our motivation, and help us take care of the bodies You preserved. Give us the grace to be patient, the courage to keep going, and the wisdom to make choices that honor You and nourish our health.

Above all, keep our eyes on You - the author and finisher of our faith. With You every setback is an opportunity for a comeback. With You, we are never alone. Thank You, Holy Spirit, for Your never ending presence.

In JESUS’ name,
Amen.

Peace & Blessings,
