Gifted Giving

When I was a young girl, my mother use to make me go to the store for the lady who lived next door to us. Mrs. Clark and her husband didn't have any children of their own, and I suppose my mother felt it appropriate to share hers with folks who she, too, called Mr. and Mrs. I wasn't allowed to take any money from this neighbor - who later in life I grew to adore - and became quite annoyed by this "charitable act" which I felt forced upon me.

The store was about three blocks away from our house, and I felt it very unfair for not being permitted to take money for those errands. I could have made at least $1.25 cents per week by running back and forth to the store for Mrs. Clark and that money would have certainly helped me to buy those scrumptious squirrel nut zipper candies that stuck to my teeth and fluffy "cheesy" cheez doodles that were a mess of fun to eat.

My mother would always remind me after witnessing my pouting face returning home empty-handed that money should not be my motive for doing things for others and especially if those others are in need. She said that until I began going to the store for Mrs. Clark without expecting to get paid, I would always have to go to the store for our childless neighbor and not get paid.

I didn't get it at first but eventually I started going to Mrs. Clark's house on my own - without being told - and would ask her and Mr. Clark if they needed me to do anything for them. I began liking how helping them made me feel. Once I began doing that, my mother started giving me money for those desirable treats she knew that I loved. She told me not to look at it as payment for helping others and to more so consider it as a "gift for giving".

Be Encouraged Beloved!

John 3:16 (King James Version)

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

John 3:16 (New Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition)

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life..."

John 3:16 (The Scriptures)

“For Elohim so loved the world that He gave His only brought-forth Son, so that everyone who believes in Him should not perish but possess everlasting life.

John 3:16-18 (The Message)
“This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn’t go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again. Anyone who trusts in him is acquitted; anyone who refuses to trust him has long since been under the death sentence without knowing it. And why? Because of that person’s failure to believe in the one-of-a-kind Son of God when introduced to him..."
